Instructors:
Liz is a PT whose involvement in hippotherapy began in 1986. In 1987 she studied hippotherapy at the Rommel Klinik in Wildbad, Germany, and is a founding member and past president of the AHA. Liz has taught at many American and international conferences over the past fifteen years; she has been extensively involved with NARHA as a board member, executive vice president, and Health and Education committee chair from 1987--2000. In 2000, Liz was the recipient of NARHA's most prestigious award, The James Brady Professional Achievement Award. Liz has been with Greenlock since its inception in 1989; she also continues to practice at Wrentham Developmental Center. She lives in Wrentham, MA, with her husband Stan, her dog Sophie and cat Maggie, and is still looking for a hobby.
Ruth is a speech/language pathologist and professional horsewoman involved in hippotherapy since 1978. She owns Skyline Therapy Services, an outpatient clinic specializing in the transdisciplinary applications of hippotherapy. Ruth has published research, presented at numerous conferences and workshops and was a featured speaker at the Ninth International Therapeutic Riding Congress in Denver, 1997. She served on the Board of Directors of the American Hippotherapy Association and is a consultant to the NARHA Health and Education Committee. She is regarded as a leader in the field of hippotherapy as a treatment tool.
Course Description:
This is a two-day workshop and was developed by the American Hippotherapy Association, Inc. In particular, the curriculum was designed from the work of the Theory Task Force, who, in 1996 and 1997, produced the Conceptual Framework for Hippotherapy. The course is designed to provide and facilitate a problem-solving approach with The Conceptual Framework for Hippotherapy, Clinical Reasoning, Motor Learning Principles and Neurodevelopmental facilitation theories as they are applied and relate to the treatment strategy of hippotherapy. This course is the last prerequisite to become a NARHA Registered Therapist.
Participants: Attendance is limited to a maximum of 16 participants with no more than 4 participants per treatment group.
Prerequisites:
Ø Licensed PT, OT, or SLP

Evidence of attendance at an AHA, Inc. Level I
Treatment Course (or AHA Inc. approved Introduction to Hippotherapy Course),
and BOTH AHA Inc. Equine Skills Level 1 (or AHA approved Equine Skills Level 1
waiver) & Equine Skills Level 2 Courses.

NOTE: EQUINE SKILLS LEVEL 2 IS AN AHA MANDATORY
PREREQUISITE FOR TAKING HIPPOTHERAPY TREATMENT PRINCIPLES LEVEL 2 COURSE. EQUINE SKILLS LEVEL 2 CANNOT BE WAIVERED.

Minimum of 100 hours of one-on-one treatment of
Hippotherapy patients or six months following completion of the Introduction or
Level I Treatment Principles Course.
LEVEL 2 Treatment
Principles:
This two-day workshop, Level ll Treatment Principles was developed by AHA Inc. The course is designed to provide and facilitate a problem solving, treatment approach, using actual patients currently involved in hippotherapy treatment programs. Practical applications to NDT, SI and Motor Learning Theory and Clinical Reasoning will be applied to the hippotherapy treatment strategy as well as an introduction the Hippotherapy Conceptual Framework Theory. Therapists will be treating actual patients within a HPOT Team, with videotaping and group discussions to further advance the learning experience. This course may be attended by licensed physical, occupational and speech therapists and assistants (PTA, COTA). The curriculum may be used only under conditions set by AHA Inc. The AHA Inc. Education Committee recommendation is to have at least six months and 100 hours experience of one to one patient treatments incorporating HPOT as a treatment strategy before taking the Level 11 Courses. Therapists who have more hours in fewer months may submit a written request documenting their background and number of hours they have completed to the Education Chairperson to be considered in less time then the six-month requirement.
Course Objectives Include:
Ø Develop a hippotherapy treatment plan based on a disablement model.
Ø Select objective outcome measures for pre and post testing
Ø Select appropriate horse and equipment for a specific patient.
Ø Practice modifications of equine movement as a primary method of enhancing patient treatment outcomes.
Ø Understand the relationship between treatment and functional outcomes.
Ø Identify appropriate functional outcome measures for hippotherapy patients.
Ø Review best practice guidelines for documentation, HIPPA compliance, and written and verbal communication among HPOT team members, other medical professionals and third party payers.
Ø
Engage in-group problem-solving using video review and discussion as a
model for collaborative treatment practice.
Ø
Be introduced to the following concepts as a foundation for advanced
clinical problem solving:
a. Clinical reasoning
b. Hippotherapy Conceptual Framework
Ø
Recognize and discuss indications for alternative positions and
equipment.
Ø
Recognize the importance of setting discharge criteria and establishing
discharge planning, including potential for transitioning to community
based programs.
Tuition:
$350.00 per person fee includes instruction, an extensive notebook of course materials and daily lunch and must be received by October 1, 2008. Fees will be refunded (less $100.00 processing and cancellation fee) for cancellations made prior to October 1, 2008. No refund will be allowed for cancellations made after October 1, 2008.
Course Specifics:
The workshop begins late afternoon, Friday, November 7, 2008, and runs through Sunday, November 9, 2008. Certificates of attendance will be given to participants who attend the ENTIRE workshop. ENROLLMENT IS LIMITED TO 15 PARTICIPANTS.
